FormulaD-PBIR-13-013

Formula Drift invaded Palm Beach International Raceway this weekend as thousands of fans filled every inch of space surrounding the drift circuit. We’ve been closely following drifting for years and enjoy checking out the competition all while visiting with some of our old drag racing competitors. There was plenty of action and controversy throughout the event with the fans questioning many of the judges calls and quite a bit of contact within the runs. In the end Michael Essa took the top spot in his E46 BMW (you may remember his Z4 car from his visit to the shop prior to last years event) flanked by the Achilles Tires entrants of Daigo Saito and Robbie Nishida. The podium was swept by turbocharged 6cylinder entrants, could we possibly be seeing a changing of the guard in FD with turbocharge entrants becoming the norm over the previous V8s? Who knows, but we like what we saw and always have our door open to the possibility of building a wild Formula Drift competitor here at Titan Motorsports, sponsors and manufactures our number is listed on the site. A big thanks to Cheralyn and the Bridges Racing (Achilles Tires) Team for the great hospitality all weekend.

This weekend V2Lab hosted it’s second Mystery Meat in downtown Orlando. Last years impromptu event brought chaos to downtown, this year the event had the cities blessing and was much more organized as a result. This event isn’t a car show, but rather a gathering of like minded enthusiast to hang out, show off their cars and enjoy the great Florida weather. As a result the scope of vehicles in attendance varies from Donks, VW, Honda, Exotics, Ruckus, bikes, all with modification from mild to wild. It was a great event, a big thanks to Ravi and the V2Lab crew for putting it together, we are already looking forward to next years event.

We just returned from TX2K13, the annual Super meet in Houston, TX. What originally started as a Supra meet over 10 years ago has blossomed into a Mecca performance enthusiasts from around the country. This year marked the changing of the guards, as what was once marketed as the annual “Supra Meet” was overrun by GTRs. Sure there were a plethora of clean Supras, Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferraris and late model domestics, but no car seemed as popular as the Nissan GTR.
Thursday we attended the GTRLife night party at Wild Wing Cafe and first got our glimpse of how popular the GTR would be at the meet when the entire parking lot was filled with Nissans latest Super car.

The dyno event took place at Hennessy’s facilities which features dual dynos, one RWD unit and and AWD unit. The RWD dyno had a sensor failure early in the afternoon which prevented many of the heavy hitters from being able to put down the big numbers they intended. While the drag strip has always been the official landmark event for TX2K, everyone knows the real action happens on the street. Houston’s finest have caught on and had their fleet working overtime trying to prevent the street races, however many went down without a hitch. The Omni hotel was overwhelmed with ever inch of it’s parking lot filled with high power cars just looking for their next victim. A quick search for TX2K on YouTube will reveal plenty of entertaining videos and events in “Mexico” for those interested in seeing what goes on after hours.

This year marked the first year in some time that we did not bring our Copper Supra, or any cars for that matter. The Supra was tested earlier this spring yielding the 201mph trap speed, however conflicts with our race team, as well as track conditions for the weekend forced us to make the tough decision to leave the car at home. We’re also currently in the process of doing a full upgrade to our GTR house car, and felt rushing it for this one event wouldn’t be the correct thing to do for this development process. We’ll get an earlier start next year and look forward to bringing out our full arsenal, as well as customers to enjoy what has become the can’t miss event if you’re a performance enthusiast. A big thank you to Peter Blach for putting blood sweat and tears into making sure this event is everything it can be, we’re proud to sponsor such a fantastic event.

Eurotrip Part 2: Titan Motorsports visits Porsche Museum in Stuttgart Germany

February 4th, 2013 Comments off
Porsche-Museum-003

Following the Autosport Show I spent a few days exploring London before jetting to Stuttgart Germany. When we first started planning our trip to Autosport I knew I couldn’t fly across the Atlantic without visiting Germany and my mecca, the Porsche Museum and factory. We landed in the dead of winter and proceeded to pickup our Audi A3 rental car and head towards the factory (and also saw snow for the second time in my life, keep in mind I grew up here in Florida). I’ve been a Porsche fanatic for many years now, living and breathing the brand, so it was great to take in the town where these machines are created and the history of how they came to be. I had requested a factory tour which was denied due to the work force just returning from their holiday leave and the available replacement date was after my return to the states. While we weren’t able to take the factory tour this trip, the Museum was open which offered a great consultation. The museum which opened in 2009 holds about 80 cars from Porsches private collection and shows the great history behind the brand and extensive racing history. There is a factory restoration facility on site, and all of the cars are in working condition and can be shipped to events and races around the world for exhibition purposes.

Porsche-Museum-006
In the entry forum there is a small coffee shop with a glass wall behind it that houses the Porsche factory workshop. The Workshop is where the factory restores historic cars to like new condition and keeps the museum maintained and the cars in running condition. It sure beats running to the local Starbucks when you can enjoy a latte and view master technicians at work!

Porsche-Museum-010
When you walk into the museum you are greeted by a work in progress Type 64 body, this aluminum body was made prior to WWII and is the design inspiration for many Porsche vehicles to follow.

Porsche-Museum-062
Just as important as the cars, is the technology that goes into them, which Porsche displays just as prominently as the vehicles in the museum. This is a billet titanium crank from one of their 917 engines, something that would be a huge undertaking even with todays CNC production, when you realize that it was from the 60s, it shows just how much Porsche was willing to invest to stay ahead.

Porsche-Museum-064
Titanium was the cold war material of choice in the 60s, this spherical gas tank was also produced entirely from the lightweight material.

Porsche-Museum-067
The museum had an entire 906 body handing from the ceiling to show the inner workings of one of the first race cars to be constructed from hand layered fiberglass over a tubular frame.

Porsche-Museum-108
It’s important to realize that the Museum is a working museum, these priceless cars are kept in working condition and exercised whenever appropriate. As a result they have plenty of blemishes, or rather character showing such use. Porsche doesn’t go out of it’s way to hide this, but rather benefits from the fact that these cars can still work as designed even today.

Porsche-Museum-110
Many of the cars are used at events around the world to help promote the Porsche brand and it’s heritage, this particular car had scrutineering stickers from the Goodwood Festival where it last ran up the hill in 2010.

Porsche-Museum-151
A Porsche 935 Long tail, one of the original monster turbocharged race cars.

Porsche-Museum-156
This particular car like many of it’s era was quite prone to oil leaks, the factory chose to simply put a drip pan under the engine to keep the floor clean rather than hide it.

Porsche-Museum-171
A car that most Porsche enthusiast lust over, the RS 2.7 Coupe. Today there are likely more replicas of these on the road than originals, so seeing the real thing in the flesh was quite the treat.

Porsche-Museum-181
3 of the most iconic modern Porsches all lined up in a row in race car form: 959, 993 and 996 GT1.

Porsche-Museum-245
The Porsche 917 gave Porsche it’s first Lemans overall win and dominated in the early 70s, a cherished time long before rules constraints limited manufactures involvement as it does today. The flat 12 cylinder engine had many configurations both NA and Turbo, but was known to produce over 1,000hp and propelled the car to speeds over 240mph on the long Mulsaane straight.

Porsche-Museum-241
The Pink Pig is one of the most recognizable of the 917s for it’s aerodynamic wider stance, however it was only entered into one race before being retired after a crash. The car was an aerodynamic research car that became so wide it would no longer fit in a standard transporter, after it’s sponsor declined having its decals on the car, it was painted in honor of it’s nickname which translates to “the pink pig”.

Porsche-Museum-210
An exploded view of the famous flat 12 engine the powered the majority of the 917s (an experimental flat 16 was tested but discontinued after the turbocharged 12 version proved quicker in testing).

Porsche-Museum-270
The Porsche Museum should be on any Porsche or automotive enthusiasts bucket list, very few places in the world house as much racing and automotive history as one can find under this roof. Next to the museum is the factory where most modern Porsches are born, and I’m anxious to do a return trip in better weather to see the production process in person after visiting the factory. For now it’s one more line scratched off my bucket list.

Titan Motorsports announces it’s 2013 Open House will take place March 9th.

titan-open-house-2013

The open house is open to the public and features a car show with trophies and prizes for the top vehicles in several “best of” classes. This year we’ve changed the format to offer less classes with more of a focus on “best in show” based on clean modified vehicles. We’re also going to have a Ruckus class this year after the huge response from the Ruckus community in years past, so bring your 2 wheel vehicle and show them off as well.

The dyno format will change this year as well, instead of having a general dyno day, we’ve reached out to shops and racers in the area to have their big power and unique builds take a spin on our Dynojet 424. Expect to see some friendly competition and big power numbers as a result.

This year will also see the return of our Bikini contest with $400 going to the winner, and $150 to the runner up. Tijuana Flats will also return offering free food to attended, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to their Just-In-Queso charity. We’ll be increasing our prize give-aways as well and have reached out to our vendors and partners to donate many great items for the raffles and prizes.

Representatives from the top brands in the automotive aftermarket industry will be on site to display their products and answer questions on their product offerings. A raffle will be held to benefit the Just-In-Queso charity, prizes include gift certificates, apparel, parts, and memorabilia from these great vendors.

Vendors Participating: Manley, FuelLab, Royal Purple, DEI, Hawk, Cometic, Brembo, Mr. Gasket, ACL, Eibach, Deatsch Werks, Race Ramps, Precision Turbo, Gates and Ferrea.

Titan Motorsports displayed at the Autosport International Show January 10-13 at the NEC Center in Birmingham England. Our booth was joined by our technology and distribution partners Manley Performance and Fidanza to display our latest products and distribution news to our European customers. We exhibited in the Engineering Hall this year which spans the first 2 days of the show and is geared towards those in the automotive engineering and trade business. In addition to the Engineering Hall there is a main hall geared towards the public that runs the entire 4 days with automotive and parts displays that would satisfy most any gear heads appetites. In this hall we were treated to many great cars not found in the states such as the latest Noble, Ginetta, Mono, and plenty of race cars including this years F1 lineup. The Autosport show is one of the few shows where you can see in depth the engineering and manufacturing side of what goes into building the most extreme vehicles in motorsports, and venture into the next hall and see the completed vehicles on display.

In the booth next to ours, Schroth had Bugatti Veyron engine on display along which had parts from the OEM development side.

After marveling at the Veyron engine and the engineering behind it, seeing the factory intake manifold in the Capricorn Group’s booth completely blew me away.

Looking for a Sequential transmision for your endurance racer made completely from billet? Albins has you covered.
Titan-Autosport-13-020

The 991 Porsche cup car was just released in images for the general public to see, but at Autosport you can see in depth the parts that make it the competitive machine it it, like these massive brakes from PFC.
Titan-Autosport-13-056

Once you got past all of the high tech parts on display there were plenty of cars new and old to marvel at, like a handful of F1 cars from decades past.
Titan-Autosport-13-068

SATS Motorsports who we’ve sponsored for the past few years also unvield their Drift Supras new livery, big things are in the works for 2013 and we look forward to expanding on this partnership and helping the team with their latest goals.
Titan-Autosport-13-096

Mclaren F1 cars are rare cars to begin with, seeing a F1 GTR is a once in a lifetime occurance, this one was owned by Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason.
Titan-Autosport-13-119

If the newer Mclaren cars are more your thing, the latest Mclaren MP4-12C GT3 was a few steps away.
Titan-Autosport-13-076

Although still not massively popular in the US like Nascar, people in Europe go crazy over F1 and Autosport caters to this by offering a rare display of the previous years F1 cars displayed for racing fans to see in the flesh. I personally enjoyed being able to compare the minute differences of each car only possibly by starting at them all a few feet from each other.
Titan-Autosport-13-127

After the show was over, we packed up our booth and left Birmingham to continue our trip by spending a few days recouperating in London. From there it was a quick flight to Germany to spend a few days braving the cold and exploring a pair of automotive enthusiasts automotive meccas in Stuttgart, expect additional posts on that in the coming days.
